Joyce Bertilson, Director
Joyce Bertilson has been a music educator in the Paradise Valley School District for 29 years. A native Arizonan, she has been the director of Choral Activities at North Canyon since 1997. Mrs. Bertilson has also taught choir and computers at the middle school level and general music for grades 1-6. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Music Education with a minor in Computer Science along with a Master of Education from Northern Arizona University. Mrs. Bertilson is also certified in Level I Orff, and is an active member in the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), National Association for Music Education (NAfME) as well as the Technology Institute for Music Educators (TI:ME). She served for many years on the board for the Arizona Choral Director's Association (AzCDA) and the Choral Directors of Arizona (ChoDA).
Mrs. Bertilson worked with the AZ Dept. of Education on the revision of the AZ State Music Standards and served on the AZ State Music Assessment Committee. She also works with Paradise Valley's Online School (pvONLINE) writing and teaching online music courses.
Throughout her teaching career, her choirs have consistently received superior ratings at state and national festivals and she has frequently served as a clinician and adjudicator for state music festivals. Mrs. Bertilson's choirs have been selected twice to perform at the AZ Music Educators Conventions. In her spare time, Mrs. Bertilson enjoys traveling, seeing Broadway musicals, doing techie stuff, and spending time with her wonderful husband and two sons.
